How you can help the strays if your area:
One of the many ways you can help stray animals is to volunteer at a local animal shelter. Some shelters and organizations in the southeast area of Michigan include:
The Humane Society of Livingston County is an animal shelter located in Howell, Michigan. The HSLC finds homes for over 2,000 pets a year, and are always looking for help. You can go to the shelter and help walk dogs, socialize with cats, and help with office work. You are always welcome to help with their fundraising events, which raise money for supplies and food.
The Michigan Animal Rescue League is one of southeast Michigan's most established animal shelters, located in Pontiac, Michigan. You can volunteer by taking care of cats, walking dogs, help at fundraisers and create fundraising events of your own. Volunteers can also foster kittens and puppies, from his or her home, while the young animal cannot live with the grown cats and dogs yet.
The Almost Home organization is an animal rescue organization located in West Bloomfield, Michigan. They nurse sick, hurt, and frightened animals back to health, and find them loving homes. They are always looking for volunteers who can help feed, walk, and socialize with the animals. The Almost Home organization also needs volunteers who can assist with daily domestic chores, transportation, fostering, adoption events, photography, and much more.
The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is an organization located in Dearborn, Michigan. The FFDAS took over the Dearborn Animal Shelter 17 years ago, to improved the conditions for the animals. The FFDAS has a very small staff and rely on volunteers to socialize with cats and dogs, walk dogs, counsel adopters, clean cages, transport animals, stuff envelopes, etc.
All of these shelters and organizations are non-profit. The only way these shelters and organizations run, financially, is with donations, volunteers, adoption fees, and fund-raising events. You can always donate money and feed an animal, at a low cost. Also, these shelters and organizations greatly appreciate when cleaning supplies, pet food, blankets/towels, litter, and other animal supplies are donated.
